About My Clients
Most of us struggle to see outside the box of our immediate struggles, which causes self-doubt and hopelessness. We often need an objective guide to hold a mirror up to our problem and see it from a different perspective. My clients usually struggle with anxiety and/or depression due to relationships, difficult adjustments, trauma, shame, or stigma. Through counseling, my clients increase their self-worth and discover the courage to take control of their lives.
My Background and Approach
I started my journey as a counselor after years of waiting tables, realizing I had a gift for working with people, and had always been concerned with the human condition. I also wanted to work with people who felt stigmatized or underserved by our healthcare systems. I worked for six years as a substance use counselor, specializing in opiate use disorders and women's issues. My clients’ struggles with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and relationships inspired me enter the field of mental health, where I work to eliminate the shame and self-stigmatization associated with these problems, opening a space for personal liberation. My work has inspired me to become an advocate for those who feel shamed or oppressed by societal pressures. I want counseling to help my clients feel empowered to live life according to their own ideals.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
As a feminist, I believe much of our suffering stems from inequalities we experience, regardless of our gender or sexual identity. While we rarely can change the oppressive systems we are involved with (work, school, government, families, etc.), we can take steps to stop oppressing ourselves. We can stop feeding off the negative messages we receive every day and see ourselves in a different light. We can work against the system by being ourselves, being proud of ourselves, and living the way we want to live. I believe being in touch with one's own body can be a tremendous source of healing and rejuvenation. I have a background in dance and practice yoga daily, which has increased my understanding of how important it is to "be" in our bodies. I explore how my clients' mental and emotional challenges affect their physical embodiment, helping them get in touch with themselves again.
