Through my work and training as a couples therapist I have come to understand that we are social creatures and we need to feel safe. The way we were nurtured as children impact the way we form attachments now and they affect every aspect of our identity especially our relationships with others. One of the main approaches I use comes from an attachment lens. As a couples counselor I work with couples to strengthen their connection with their partner to heal attachment wounds.

Conflict most frequently surfaces when one partner begins to define their identity outside of the relationship which is a necessary and healthy transition. However, this can feel threatening when codependency is a prominent element in the relationship. I work with couples to develop strategies to increase their sense of safety within the relationship and empower them to further develop their autonomy and sense of self within the relationship.

Relationships can be overwhelming-- communication hurdles, past hurts, and fears of incompatibility create roadblocks. Couples counseling will help you learn tools to deepen your understanding of you and your partners defensiveness which often comes from vulnerability and attachment wounds. Counseling will equip you with effective strategies to stop the negative cycles in their tracks. You will learn how to replace them with healthier responses that promote healing and connection.

This approach is based on Dr. John Gottman’s 40 years of research investigating and defining behaviors and communication skills found in healthy, long-lasting relationships. I work with couples to identify these communication patterns that are blocking them from forming a deeper connection and instead work to learn new ways of interacting that are statistically proven to improve relationships and promote healing and connection.

The frameworks I utilize the most are the Gottman Method and the Developmental Model. I have completed Gottman Level 1 and Level 2 Trainings as well as extensive training in the developmental model. I will also weave in techniques and methods learned from Emotional Focused therapy and Esther Perel’s work when appropriate.
